They are, but not for security applications. Aluminium is an example: it’s a good conductor of heat and electricity but with a poor density, it will be ineffective against mallet impacts. It will easily break. Even partially used, this kind of materials can create breaches easily passable when exposed to thieves gear. This is one of the weaknesses of the locks that seem heavy duty, but ultimately not against most basic DIY tools. No lock is perfect protection, but this is the best I found. You either need to be a professional lock picker working upside down, or remove the coupler from the trailer frame. The pin that secures the cast iron cover to the lock in the ball is adjustable so you can get a tight fit. The pin is only adjustable from the inside so it can't be tampered with. Vanessa at the factory provides lightning responses to any question. Expensive, but the very best thing I could find anywhere. Great design by AMPLock! After doing lots of research on similar products, I decided to give this one a try. Yes, the price was a bit higher than I wanted to pay, but it was also protecting a very expensive investment. After using this (I bought two different sizes) on two different oversized trailers, the quality and overall product is definitely worth the value!! I will be purchasing this for all my future trailers of all sizes. No questions asked, definitely a great product! So I'd like to do a pretty comprehensive review of this lock because I had quite an experience with multiple locks of theirs and their customer service representative.First, I'll go through the features ratings that I did on the lock.Easy to Install: Yes, very simple and easy. Comes with two keys plus a lock key tag that has specific numbers on it that you can use to order either extra keys or extra locks that match existing locks and keys.Easy to Use: Yes very easy to use. I don't see how you could not figure it out.Security features: I gave this 4 stars, and this is tied into a rather complex story that I'll get into shortly.Service: Impeccable. Customer service representative went above and beyond to solve my issue, so much as to take my request to the design team of engineers and fix the problem at the source, and re-manufacture the part to work better.Quality: Top notch quality. Super heavy duty. You would need to break or severely bend the trailer coupler before this lock ever came off.The Story: So last April, I bought one of the locks for my trailer. When taking it out. I looked it over carefully and just admired the most expensive lock I'd ever bought. On the steel ball part of the lock (which also contains the key and locking mechanism), I noticed that the locking pin that catches on the other part of the lock had some play in it. I didn't think too much about it initially and used it for a few months, but over time, it seemed to have more play in it than I remembered. I e mailed the Amplock representative after explaining the situation and sending a hand drawn diagram of the problem I was having, they sent me another lock. When I got this lock in, the new one also had a good amount of play in it, not quite as much as the old one, but enough to make me wonder why it was there and if my old one had originally had that much and gotten worse over time. I explained that situation to the representative and they eventually got back to me and said they would be addressing the issue with the design team and would be manufacturing an updated model to the lock I got that would fix the issue. It took a little over a month, but I got my new lock in. It was much better. There was still a very small amount of play in the locking pin, but far better than the last two they had sent and enough to look like it was going to be a very good long term lock.Maintenance: In order to service the lock, Amplock recommends silicone free PL-100 lubricant. I've read reviews before complaining of seized up locks from improper care and not using the proper lubricant. Despite the 5 star review on Amplock locks and their service, I feel they could improve slightly by including their recommended lubricant in their literature and Amazon listing. Heck, for $265, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to include a little mini spray can of their recommended lubricant, just so people can get started off on the right foot using it and so they'll know exactly what to use.Other than that though, Amplock has really got a good product, and their customer service is very helpful and they stand behind their product. I've heard people review this item saying "this is the lock you buy after your trailer gets stolen" and I quickly realized that the current lock I had on mine was a very minor deterrent, and I run a landscaping business out of my trailer, so I wasn't going to chance it.I love the fact that when I put this lock, I feel totally relaxed that my trailer is secure. We use this for our camping trailer. You pay a lot for a trailer if you don't want it stolen best get this lock, easy to use. This thing is heavy and extremely solid.used this on one of our wagons. rugged, durable, lock is different, tough to pick,if someone takes the time to destroy this they're probably not going to tow the trailer, unless they winch it on to a roll back.... its not cheap, when you see it you'll see its worth the cost.At first I was iffy about spending near $300 for a trailer lock. I was using a cheap $25 master lock to lock my trailer until I seen a lot of videos about how easy they are to pick them and steal the trailer. I use my trailer for landscaping, the trailer alone was $2,000. With all the material in it it adds up to about to about $8,000. So a $300 lock is definitely worth it IMO. There aren't a lot of options when it comes to good trailer locks. Obviously this isn't 100% steal proof but nothing is. They will have to take some time and make a lot of noise to take this thing off which most chiefs won't bother doing.I purchased this 2" as a gift for my son. The day it arrived he told me I ordered the wrong size! Immediately I messaged Amplock requesting an exchange. I received a response later that day and within 2 days a replacement was shipped as soon as the courier gave them word that they had the lock I was returning. By the end of the week my son's new enclosed 16 ft trailer sat securely locked in the driveway. The quality is well worth the bigger bucks. Next my son has hinted at a hitch pin lock for Christmas. Amplock is the way to go!I'm really impressed by this trailer coupler lock. Really hefty!! This a real serious lock. It's quite expensive but there's not much competition out there at this level of sturdiness. Compared to the rest, usually made in china, you only get the appearance of safety. Hopefully this one will deter the common thief.Norm from Montreal, Canada.A real lock for sure! Beefy, heavy, sturdy. Easy to use. Fits perfectly the 2in. couple on my older enclosed trailer (2005).It will be a challenge for a thief to get rid of it. A little bit pricey but if you have a few thousands of dollars worth of equipment in your enclosed trailer, well... I already recommended it to a few friends. Bonus: it is made in Canada!Easy to use out of the box. My boat’s insurer recommended that I purchase an amp lock. Now I-know why. It’s amazing, highest quality, well designed and easy to use. No way that anyone will be able to steal my boat or trailer with this armored beast. The locking mechanism is literally armor piercing shell proof. Will purchase another one for my second boat /trailer.*UPDATE*Called amplock and they confirmed it was supposed to come with 2 keys, they promptly send me out a key.The lock itself is heavy duty, although i found it sits loosely on the tongue of my trailer. It was very disappointing to discover it only comes with 1 key.. the key itself is unique so i doubt i will be able to have a spare made at my local lock smith. For the price it should come with at least 2 keys.
